Darjeeling
Straddling a ridge at 2134m and
surrounded by a tea plantations,
Darjeeling has been a popular
hill station since the British
established it as an R&R centre
for their troops in mid-1800s.
People come here now, as they
did then, to escape the heat,
humidity and hassle of the north
Indian plain. You get an
indication of how popular
Darjeeling is from the 70 or so
hotels recognised by the tourist
office and the scores of others
which don't come up to its
requirements. Here you will find
yourself surrounded by mountain
people from all over the eastern
Himalaya who have come to work,
to trade or - in the case of the
Tibetans - as refugees. Outside
of the monsoon season (June to
September), the views over the
mountains to the snowy peaks of
Kanchenjunga and down to the
swollen rivers in the valleys
are magnificent. Darjeeling is a
fascinating place where you can
see Buddhist monasteries, visit
a tea plantation and see how the
tea is processed, go for a ride
on the chairlift, spend days
hunting for bargains in
colourful markets and
handicrafts shops, or go
trekking to high-altitude spots
for closer views of Kanchenjunga.
Like many places in the
Himalaya, half the fun is in
getting there and Darjeeling has
the unique attraction of its
famous toy train . This
miniature train loops and
switchbacks its way up the steep
mountainsides from New
Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.

Kalimpong
Kalimpong is a bustling and
rapidly expanding, though still
relatively small, bazaar town
set among the rolling foothills
and deep valleys of the
Himalayan at an altitude of
1250m. It was once part of the
lands belonging to the rajas of
Sikkim, until the beginning of
the 18th century when it was
taken from them by the
Bhutanese. In the 19th century
it passed into the hands of the
British and thus became part of
West Bengal. It became a centre
for Scottish missionary activity
in the late 19th century,
Kalimpong's attractions include
three monasteries, a couple of
solidly built churches, an
excellent private library for
the study of Tibetan and
Himalayan language and culture,
a sericulture, orchid nurseries
and fine views over the
surrounding countryside.
Although not many travelers
bother to visit Kalimpong,
there's enough here to keep you
occupied for a couple of days,
and for the energetic there's
some good trekking. The most
interesting part of a trip to
Kalimpong is the journey there
from Darjeeling via the Teesta
River bridge. If you have no
permit for Sikkim then the town
is worth visiting just for the
journey.
lachung
It is evening by the time you
reach Lachung at a height of
8610 ft, one of the most
exquisite villages in the
valleys of North Sikkim. With
resplendent snow-capped
mountains, dazzling waterfalls
and sparkling streams, Lachung
has been described as the "most
picturesque village of Sikkim"
by none other than Joseph Salton
Hooker in his definitive, The
Himalayan Journal (1855). A
small monastery adorning a
solitary hilltop is a perfect
place for meditation. The entire
valley gets a completely
different look in winter when
wrapped by thick layer of snow.
Lachung has a small market but
due to tourist influx several
small and medium hotels have
come up with basic facilities.
Lachung provides a base for the
travellers bound to Yumthang
Valley, popularly known as the
'Switzerland of the East'.
Yungthong This
famous valley in North Sikkim
lies 140km north of Gangtok.
Lachung provides the base for
exploration of Yumthang, the
valley of flowers. Situated at
an altitude of 11800 ft ( 3564m)
with a close proximity of Tibet,
Yumthang is a unique place where
the tree line ends.
But rhododendron and primula
still bloom covering the whole
area in a surreal shade. It also
offers view of a stunning array
of peaks with Pauhunri and
Shundu Tsenpa. A number of hot
springs are scattered in the
valley providing an unexpected
opportunity to feel the warmth
of the water even in freezing
temperature. Rich in sulphur
these springs are believed to
have miraculous healing power.
Peeling
The pleasant little town of
Pelling is famous for
magnificent view of the
snow-capped mountains of
Kanchenjunga. Pelling is about
133 km away from Siliguri and
125km from Gangtok and well
connected by bus and jeep
services. Placid Pelling pulls
most of the visitors for its
representative status in
history, nature and culture of
the state.
